170,000 on 'de facto list' for operations

I was reading this article in the daily news this morning. Last year 280,000 people were told they need some form of elective surgery, including myself. 170,000 of those are not even on the waiting list, and for those of us that do make the waiting list, it is hit or miss whether you're deemed urgent enough to be prioritised or remain on the list. I had a letter on Saturday informing me I did not 'score' highly enough and was removed.

New Zealander's are very lucky we have a good public health system compared to other countries, but there is growing concern over the increase in demand which doesn't match resources available. Apparently.

So how do we overcome this? HEALTH INSURANCE!

A 30 year old healthy male can have Surgery Cover for as little as approximately $9 a week, or two coffees, comparing apples for apples. For elective surgery, you have the ability to choose who, what, where, when and how, so for Nick Taylor in the article, there would be no uncertainty of waiting lists or further deterioration resulting loss of work in a couple of months.

Makes you think. Two coffees.

PART THREE OF A SIX-PART SERIES

Richard: “Remember virtually nobody could speak English and we had no Spanish. There was also an underlying culture we didn’t know about until later, that you just had to go along with the system. Being loud and pushy wouldn’t work, we just had to be very patient.
